Plasma Emission Spectroscopy

 
 

Plasma is generated by heating ordinary matter to high temperatures, and is comprised of ions, atoms, and charged particles. As there is high energy within plasma, the atoms and ions present are in excited electronic states. When these relax, light is emitted. These wavelengths are unique to each atom or ion present.

Spectra produced consists of very narrow peaks so high resolution is required to distinguish lines close together. The intensity of light correlates to the concentration of the species within the sample. The high temperatures generated at the beginning of the plasma process gives a continuum emission that masks the sharp lines from individual atomic species. As the plasma quickly cools, the sharp lines become visible.
